Administration of Anesthesia by Hygienists |

A dental hygienist licensed by the Kentucky Board of Dentistry may apply for certification to administer block and infiltration anesthesia and nitrous oxide under the delegation and direct supervision of a dentist.
The applicant must successfully complete the minimum hours covering specific techniques and topics as described in KRS 313.343 and 201 KAR 8:460 from an accredited dental or dental hygiene school.
Approved programs in Kentucky:
- University of Louisville School of Dentistry
- University of Kentucky College of Dentistry
- Western Kentucky University Dental Hygiene Program
- Bluegrass Community & Technical College Dental Hygiene Program (formerly Lexington Community College)
- Kentucky Community Technical College System Dental Hygiene Programs

*** The certified dental hygienist must continue to actively administer anesthesia as described in KRS 313.343 and 201 KAR 8:460. Board approved continuing education anesthesia courses are required for any anesthesia certified dental hygienist who goes one year without practical application. ***

Out-of-State Certification |

A dental hygienist who holds anesthesia certification from an institution other than those noted above or from another state may apply for certification in Kentucky.
In addition to submitting the application, fee, and copy of the anesthesia certification, the applicant must submit documentation of the law and administrative regulations of the other jurisdiction (that specify the requirements are equal to or greater than the requirements established in KRS 313.343 and 201 KAR 8:460) and a syllabus of course work from the accrediting institution attended by the applicant.
